nhs golden jubilee

national

hospital

Located in Clydebank near Glasgow, NHS Golden Jubilee is not just hospital, it’s home to the NHS Scotland Academy, Research Institute, Centre for Sustainable Delivery and the Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel within a modern, purpose-built campus. Adopting a co-design approach, we collaborated with the client to transform design concepts into reality via the production of prototypes through to the manufacture, and installation of the bespoke internal wayfinding signs and external illuminated building signage on this project.

accessible approach

Norsign Group Ltd played a key role in the development of signage at the Golden Jubilee University National Hospital. Our team welcomed the opportunity to support this NHS facility by providing signage solutions to help enhance the environment with clear, accessible, signage tailored to the needs of patients, staff, and visitors.

The Golden Jubilee signage project required a diverse range of solutions that aligned with the client’s vision combining visually impactful elements with tactile, accessible features. This included fully interchangeable door signage incorporating both braille and tactile components to meet accessibility standards.

The external halo illuminated building signage offers high visibility at night and created a striking visual landmark as the hospital can be seen from the banks of the River Clyde at night. Coordination with the main contractor, Kier Construction, was essential to ensure the concealed wiring behind the cladding remained accessible for installation. The final result is both technically sound and visually impressive.

bespoke design

Our design team worked closely with the Golden Jubilee team to develop a tailored specification for the wayfinding signage. This collaborative approach ensured the final designs were both functional and aligned with the architectural identity of the project.

To achieve the raised tactile elements, we explored and tested new manufacturing techniques. The wayfinding signage featured flat cut acrylic for floor level indicators and directional arrows, crafted from CNC machined coloured cast acrylic and enhanced with 3D printed tactile information.

One of the key challenges was the adhesion of ink to the 3D printed acrylic arrows. Initial tests revealed poor ink bonding, prompting the use of an optically clear film to facilitate proper adhesion which significantly improved the final product. Despite the complexity of the 3D printing process, the outcome met the client’s expectations and received positive feedback. These particular signs are visually striking, as clearly demonstrated in the accompanying images.
