Electrical Planning of Signage

Planning Electrical Supplies for Illuminated Signage

Electrical planning plays an important role in the successful installation of illuminated signage. Project teams need to coordinate supply positions, cable routes and access requirements before contractors complete walls, ceilings and external finishes.

Poor coordination can leave visible cables, supplies in the wrong locations or signs that installers cannot connect safely. Early planning helps prevent delays, remedial work and unexpected costs on site.

Each type of illuminated sign has different electrical requirements. Face illuminated letters, halo illuminated lettering, lightboxes, flex neon and illuminated totems may all require different supply positions and connection arrangements.

The project team should confirm the sign construction before finalising the electrical layout. The signage contractor can then position each supply where installers can conceal it without interfering with the sign or its fixings.

agree the electrical supply position

A general note showing power “by others” does not provide enough information. The electrical contractor needs an exact supply position that corresponds with the approved sign location and cable entry point.

Individual illuminated letters may require several cable entry points. Installers can sometimes connect the letters by daisy chaining the wiring and concealing it within the wall, a ladder frame or a mounting panel. The sign design, supporting surface and available access will determine the most appropriate method.

The signage contractor should provide accurate setting out information before the electrical contractor installs the cables.

The project team should plan cable routes around the building construction. Masonry, internal partitions, rainscreen cladding, insulated panels and glazed façades each create different challenges.

The chosen route must allow the cables to reach the sign without remaining visible or affecting the building finish. Contractors should agree any penetrations with the relevant trades and seal them correctly to protect the building from water ingress.

For external signs, the team must also confirm how cables will pass through the façade and where the drivers or power supplies will sit.

provide accessible isolation

The electrical contractor should provide a suitable isolation point so maintenance teams can switch off the sign safely during inspections or repairs. The isolator must remain accessible without detracting from the finished installation.

The project team should confirm who will supply and install the isolator before work begins. This prevents uncertainty when the signage installation team arrives on site.

Allow Space for Drivers and Power Supplies

LED illuminated signs usually require drivers or transformers. These components need enough space, suitable ventilation and safe access for future maintenance or replacement.

Contractors should not permanently seal drivers behind finished surfaces. Depending on the installation, they may place them behind the sign, within an accessible ceiling void, inside a suitable enclosure or within the sign structure.

The signage contractor should also check the cable distance between each driver and the illuminated components during technical development.

Coordinate the Final Electrical Connection

The project team should clearly define the responsibilities of the signage contractor and electrical contractor. The signage contractor may install and connect the internal sign components, while the electrical contractor provides the power supply, isolation and final connection.

The team should also confirm all testing and certification requirements before installation. Clear responsibilities help both contractors complete their work safely and avoid delays at the final connection stage.

consider future maintenance

Illuminated signs need inspection and may require replacement components during their service life. Drivers, wiring and isolators must therefore remain accessible after contractors complete the surrounding finishes.

The team should also plan access to high level signage. Future maintenance may require a MEWP, roof access or another safe method of reaching the sign without damaging finished surfaces or disrupting the building.

Coordinate Electrical Requirements Early

The project team should involve the signage contractor before the electrical first fix wherever possible. Early coordination allows everyone to agree the sign construction, supply position, cable route, isolation and access requirements before installation begins.

This approach supports a clean installation, reduces problems on site and makes the finished signage easier to maintain.
