Sustainability in Signage

What we are actually doing

Sustainability is becoming a requirement across construction and fit out. For signage, this goes beyond material choices. It impacts procurement, manufacturing, installation and day to day operations.

At Norsign Group Ltd, we are making practical changes across the business to reduce impact, improve efficiency and support our clients’ environmental targets.

reducing waste at source

Waste reduction is one of the biggest areas of improvement.

By tightening our production processes and material usage, we have reduced the volume of waste leaving our facility. This has resulted in fewer collections from Biffa, lowering both disposal volumes and transport emissions.

Alongside this, we have introduced segregated recycling across both our office and yard. We now separate materials such as aluminium, plastics, paper and packaging at source, improving recycling rates and reducing what goes to landfill.

We have also revised internal systems to reduce unnecessary printing and support a wider move towards digital workflows across the business.

smarter material choices

Material selection plays a major role in sustainable signage.

We have expanded our range of lower impact materials, giving clients more options without compromising on quality or durability. This includes responsibly sourced substrates, recyclable materials and longer life solutions that reduce the need for replacement.

Where we use timber based products, we source them from responsibly managed forests and ensure they are FSC certified where applicable.

We also assess suppliers as part of our procurement process, prioritising those who hold recognised environmental accreditations and demonstrate responsible manufacturing practices.

In production, we exclusively print using latex inks. These provide a lower VOC alternative to traditional solvent based inks, reducing harmful emissions while maintaining print quality and durability.

Improving how we deliver projects

Sustainability is not just about what we make, but how we deliver it.

We are transitioning our installation fleet towards electric vehicles, reducing emissions associated with site visits, surveys and installation works, particularly on projects with multiple phases or return visits.

In city locations such as London, our sales team uses electric bikes to move between meetings, reducing reliance on cars and cutting carbon emissions in high traffic areas.

We also plan installations more efficiently to reduce unnecessary travel and minimise disruption on site.

Everyday operational changes

Small changes across the business add up.

We have introduced simple but effective measures such as:

  • Turn off policies for lighting, equipment and workstations
  • Upgrading all internal office lighting to LED
  • Reducing printing and moving towards digital documentation
  • Improving control of energy use across the office and workshop

These straightforward steps contribute to lowering overall energy consumption.

Aligned with recognised sustainability standards

Our approach to sustainability is supported by our ISO management systems, including:

  • ISO 14001 for environmental management
  • ISO 9001 for quality management
  • ISO 45001 for health and safety

These frameworks ensure we build environmental considerations into how we plan, manage and deliver projects.

Supporting client sustainability requirements

Sustainable signage is not one decision or one product. It is a series of improvements across the whole process.

We continue to review how we operate, work with our supply chain and invest in better solutions that reduce impact while maintaining the quality and durability our clients expect.
