Totem Signs

Design, Materials and Installation

Totem signs comes in all shapes and sizes, from simple building identification signs to large, illuminated structures at the entrances to commercial developments. The design will depend on where the sign is going, what information it needs to display and how people will approach it.

choosing the right totem sign

The size and style of a totem will largely depend on its location and purpose.

For a single occupier building, a simple sign displaying the company name and logo may be all that’s required. Larger commercial developments and business parks need something more substantial, particularly where several businesses share an entrance.

Viewing distance is another consideration. A totem positioned beside a main road needs larger lettering and less information than one located at a pedestrian entrance, where visitors have more time to read it.

It’s also worth considering the surrounding buildings, landscaping and any restrictions on the available space before settling on a design.

totem signs: materials and finishes

Manufacturers commonly use aluminium for external totem signage. It’s relatively lightweight, durable, and can be fabricated into a wide range of shapes and sizes.

Powder coating provides a choice of colours and finishes, making it possible to match corporate branding or complement the surrounding architecture.

Designers can also incorporate stainless steel, acrylic, and other materials, particularly when they require a specific finish or illuminated detail.

For external installations, material selection needs to account for weather exposure, maintenance and long term durability.

foundations and installation

It’s easy for us to concentrate on the appearance of a totem and overlook what’s required to install it. Unlike wall mounted signage, freestanding totems need suitable foundations and structural support. The size of the foundations will depend on factors including the height and weight of the sign, wind loading and ground conditions.

Structural calculations are an important part of this process, particularly for larger totems. These factors help us determine the required foundations, internal steelwork, and fixing arrangements to ensure the sign can safely withstand the loads we will subject it to.

Underground services can also affect the positioning of a totem. Ideally, planners should consider these requirements while they are still planning external works. You can avoid having to excavate newly finished areas later in the project by installing foundations before completing paving and landscaping.

allowing for changes

On commercial developments with multiple occupiers, the information displayed on a totem isn’t necessarily permanent. Tenants move, businesses rebrand and new occupiers arrive. If the signage incorporates removable panels or replaceable graphics, you can make these changes without replacing the entire structure.

It’s a relatively simple consideration during the design stage that can save money and unnecessary work further down the line.
