The Gradel Quadrangles at New College, University of Oxford, represent a contemporary addition to one of the institution’s oldest colleges. Designed by David Kohn Architects, the development provides new student accommodation, teaching rooms, and social spaces that blend seamlessly with the college’s historic setting.

Appointed by Sir Robert McAlpine, Norsign Group Ltd delivered a full internal and external signage package throughout the Gradel Quadrangles complex. This included engraved and infilled Valchromat internal wayfinding, donor plaques, bespoke manifestations, built up external building lettering, and informative lecterns designed to complement the architectural aesthetic.
The signage had to fit the architecture to reflect a balance between tradition and innovation pairing modern materials and construction techniques with the timeless character of Oxford’s collegiate environment. Every element from material selection to typography was considered to maintain design consistency and ensure compliance with college standards. By aligning the signage detailing with the building finishes and wayfinding strategy, Norsign delivered a coordinated solution that enhanced usability, reinforced the design narrative, and met the client’s high expectations for quality and durability.

From initial planning through to completion, Norsign maintained close coordination with Sir Robert McAlpine and the College representatives to achieve smooth integration of all signage elements in line with project timelines and site activities. With multiple stakeholders and high architectural standards, our proactive approach to detail, mock ups, and finish approvals ensured that the final product met both aesthetic and functional expectations.
Health, safety, and programme alignment were central to our delivery our installation teams worked within tight constraints and preserved the integrity of surrounding heritage structures, completing the works efficiently and without disruption to ongoing college activities.
