Improving Safety, Privacy and Design
Glass manifestations do far more than prevent people from walking into glazing.
When planned properly, manifestations help projects meet safety requirements, improve privacy, reinforce branding and contribute to the overall design of a building. Yet they are often treated as a last minute addition rather than an integral part of the glazing package.
In this article, we explore how manifestations can enhance both the functionality and appearance of a space, while helping project teams avoid common design and compliance issues.
What Are Glass Manifestations?
Artists apply glass manifestations as visual markings to glazed screens, doors, and partitions. They make glass more visible, helping users identify its presence and reducing the risk of collision.
Manifestations can take many forms, including:
- Frosted bands
- Dots and patterns
- Corporate branding
- Decorative
- Privacy films
- Bespoke printed designs
They can be applied internally or externally and are suitable for offices, schools, healthcare facilities, universities, commercial buildings and public spaces.

Glass Manifestations Support Safety and Compliance
One of the primary functions of manifestations is to improve safety and help projects meet the requirements of UK Building Regulations.
Large areas of glazing can be difficult to identify, particularly in busy environments or where lighting conditions create reflections. Manifestations help make glass visible and support compliance with Approved Document K (Protection against impact and collision) and Approved Document M (Access to and use of buildings).
To achieve compliance, manifestations should provide sufficient visual contrast against the background seen through the glazing and be positioned within recognised height zones. Typically, manifestations are installed at two distinct levels:
- Between 850mm and 1000mm above finished floor level
- Between 1400mm and 1600mm above finished floor level
Where continuous bands or decorative features are used, they should generally be at least 50mm high. Individual signs, logos or symbols used as manifestations should typically be at least 150mm high and repeated where necessary across larger glazed areas.
Considering manifestations during the design process allows project teams to coordinate glazing layouts, sight lines, branding requirements and compliance obligations before installation, helping to avoid costly alterations later in the programme.
creating Privacy Without Blocking Light
Many projects require privacy but still want to maximise natural daylight.
Manifestations provide an effective solution by obscuring views into meeting rooms, consultation spaces, offices and teaching environments while maintaining an open and bright feel.
Designers can adjust opacity levels, patterns and coverage areas to achieve the right balance between privacy and transparency.

How Glass Manifestations Reinforce Brand Identity
Manifestations can also support branding throughout a building.
Project teams often incorporate logos, colours, patterns and bespoke graphics into glazed screens to create a more consistent user experience. This approach can strengthen brand identity while providing a practical safety feature.
By combining functionality and design, manifestations can become a key part of a building’s visual identity.
Enhancing Interior Design
Manifestations offer significant creative flexibility.
Designers can use them to introduce colour, texture and visual interest without altering the glazing itself. From subtle etched effects to large format graphics, manifestations can complement interior finishes and contribute to the overall design concept.
This makes them particularly effective in education, workplace and healthcare environments where both aesthetics and functionality matter.
Planning Manifestations
Leaving manifestations until the end of a project can create unnecessary challenges.
Early engagement allows project teams to coordinate glazing layouts, door schedules, branding requirements and compliance considerations before manufacture and installation. This approach helps avoid redesign work, programme delays and additional costs.
